A domain name is an essential part for your business because it represents your business, your company and everything. You definitely make mistakes while choosing a domain name which you need to avoid. Read my blog and avoid these terrible mistakes while choosing a domain name.

Before that give my blog on how to choose a domain name a read, http://teamjugadu.com/blog/how-to-choose-a-domain-name/

1. You try to match your business name and domain name

It is not necessary to match your domain name with your business name and vice versa because it does not matter. For eg., Amazon does not necessarily mean a business site if we first hear it, does it? Amazon is a forest or bird but no shopping site.

Meaning, it does not have to match your business. Keep it simple and you will be good to go.

2. You try to become creative!

It is not your fault that you are being creative while you choose a domain name because you think more creative will attract many people and you will get traffic on your website but the truth is this is not the case.

A visitor or someone who is hearing about your business for the first time wants something that is easy to spell and check. You will always have to spell out names like naymz, takkle or flickr and it is nothing but irritating for you as well as the customer. Are you gonna spell it out a 100 times if you meet 100 people asking about your business everyday?

Choose a simple name and people will already know about you.

3. You did not do the research work

Okay, you chose a domain name for your business, you are now spending to promote it everywhere and what you find out that it is being already used by someone else. Even if they haven’t registered their name, they can claim it to be their name.

So, do the research work properly and use google to know if someone else doesn’t own it. A little google search won’t hurt anyone, right?

4. Leave room to extend your business

You need to have some space with your domain name just in case you want to extend your business in the future. You don’t want to outgrow your business name. What if Amazon named it bookstore.com then they would have been limited to books only. Bummer!

One name that outgrew it self is the Burlington coat factory and they thought of extended their business in the future with a tagline “We are more than just coats”‘ troublesome? Take advice if you are not too good with it but don’t make a mistake because it will reflect your work.

5. Your name’s pronunciation is b@d

If people are not able to pronounce your business name, you are out before you are in! You cannot choose a name that sounds fancy because it will be difficult to pronounce and your will have to spell it out everytime. Try not to use numbers, punctuation marks or colors to make it more difficult.

Choose a name and not a tongue twister!

6. Try not to invent words!

You might want to be creative and feel different from others or your competitors, but don’t end up inventing a new name that doesn’t exist or sounds unnatural.

You might want to mash up two words together but it will be difficult to pronounce and search in google.

7. You try to be a mystery!

Don’t name your flower and plant selling website a jungle, please. I wouldn’t personally after hearing this name want to know what you are doing or selling.

Sometimes you keep names that annoy people and are surely meaningless. Following the trend always isn’t an option because it can you down road too.

Conclusion:

Avoid these common mistakes that people who do not have much knowledge on how to choose a domain name make and if you are still not able to get it right, get a consultation.
